Open Heart Sangha is a welcoming Buddhist community whose mission is to support one another in our spiritual journey. We are committed to promoting personal wisdom, ethical behavior and meditation, loving-kindness, compassion, and equanimity in the community, and to sharing the Buddha-Dharma in our sangha and throughout the world.
Open Heart Sangha is an on-going dharma practice group that focuses on the teachings of the Buddha and meditation practice. We have been meeting for eighteen years. Our goal is to incorporate the teachings and practice into our daily lives through study, practice and the support and loving-kindness of the teacher and the spiritual community.
“Sangha” means a community of people who are on the same path. The Sangha is a support and a refuge. It is one of the Three Jewels of Buddhism, along with the Buddha, both the historical teacher and our own enlightened heart-mind, and the Dharma, the Buddha’s teachings.
Our primary form of meditation is shamatha vipashyana, mindfulness and insight meditation. Each meditation session typically begins with one 20 minute meditation, sometimes guided by our teacher, followed by a dharma talk, and concluding with a 10 minute silent meditation. We are a dynamic group, seeking to know ourselves better through this study, so during the teaching, questions and discussion are encouraged.
We base our study on the teachings of the Buddha, from the sutras as interpreted by many great people, such as His Holiness, the Dalai Lama, Thich Nhat Hahn, Pema Chodron, and Ajahn Chah.
We welcome everyone to participate – you do not have to be or become a Buddhist to benefit from this practice. You can incorporate the teachings and philosophy into your own personal beliefs, whatever they may be.
